Cloyne 0-24 Killeagh 0-18

THEY shipped a double-digit defeat to Kanturk in round one, part of the problem was their lack of scoring power.

Not the case yesterday in Midleton with plenty of options upfront for Cloyne as they collected a valuable pair of points in the Cork SAHC Group A second round.

The quality of the flags as well cannot be underestimated, in fact from both east Cork sides. They came fast and furious and from all corners of the field. Level 12 times – nine in the first half – Cloyne who earlier missed a penalty, closed with a flourish and can look forward to their next outing against Newcestown at the end of the month.

Killeagh will be disappointed as they faded badly in the closing stages. They led 0-17 to 0-15 after the second water break, but it was Cloyne’s strong finish that ended their hopes.

The sides were deadlocked at the break, 0-10 apiece, tit-for-tat all the way through. Andrew Leahy – a standout player for Killeagh struck four and there were three frees from Ryan McCarthy.

Cloyne’s free-taker Mikey Cahill and Ashley Walsh (one free) accounted for six of their total. They also had a penalty strike from Keith Dennehy saved by Colin Walsh after Paudie O’Sullivan was dragged down.

The second half continue in similar fashion. However, Killeagh established a gap coming towards the end of the third quarter, 0-15 to 0-12. And were two up thanks to a fantastic point from Daniel Walsh.

Cloyne, with three minors – Eanna Motherway in particular impressive - registered nine points to Killeagh’s one amid a scorching finale.

Some really good flags were raised from Mikey Cahill, Brian Walsh, Ashley Walsh and Dennehy. There was one lovely score from a short Donal Óg Cusack puck-out to captain Brian Fleming and to Briain Minihane who split the posts.
