Adrigole 2-11 Mayfield 2-8

ARDIGOLE held off a spirited late revival from Mayfield to secure a hard-fought win following this entertaining championship game played in Inchigeela last Saturday evening.

Two goals in the space of three minutes in the second half from ace duo Kevin Goggin and David Harrington moved the Beara outfit nine points clear with five minutes remaining. Their city opponents however finished with a flourish as they netted two late goals to ensure a very nervous finale for the eventual winners.

Adrigole stood resolute, however, to secure a crucial win which sets them up nicely for a successful championship campaign. They play Mitchelstown next, while Mayfield play Glanworth.

Mayfield who played with the aid of the breeze in the opening half started brightly as they moved two points clear after 10 minutes following points from Nicky Kelly and Dan Lucey.

The response from Adrigole was emphatic however as they proceeded to score six successive points within the next 14 minutes. Impressive centre-forward Kieran O’Sullivan struck two points, with David Harrington, Jason Harrington, Seanie O’Sullivan and Kevin Goggin also recording points.

Mayfield finished the opening half strongly as they recorded two late points through Lucey and Paul Condon to reduce the arrears to two points at the interval, 0-6 to 0-4.

Adrigole quickly moved three points clear within ten seconds of the second half resuming when the impressive Jason Harrington pointed. Mayfield were growing into proceedings and they reduced the arrears to one point after 38 minutes following scores from Dan Lucey, Nicky Kelly and Dave Malone.

Mayfield were now dominant. They spurned a great goal chance when Shane Duggan’s powerful drive flashed inches past the post as the city team grew in stature.

Adrigole reasserted their supremacy as they notched 2-3 in nine minutes. Seanie O’Sullivan and Kevin Goggin recorded points before Goggin and Harrington netted following great moves. Kevin Goggin immediately added a further point which moved them ten points clear after 56 minutes.

Mayfield fought gallantly and they were rewarded with late goals from Stephen Hackett and Robbie Lynch which ensured a fraught finale for Adrigole.

Adrigole held firm however to secure a deserved, but nervous win.
