Cork camogie club draw: Champions Sarsfields will face Glen Rovers

THE live camogie draws on the Cork Camogie Fanpage were brilliant.

The excitement was palpable and I for one feel that it should be done this way every year. There was great anticipation among players during the day and they tuned in by the dozens.

Normally the board delegates attend the draws and send texts via WhatsApp to their groups on who their club was drawn against. But there's excitement too in seeing first hand how other clubs fared and overall, apart from a small issue about audibility, it worked a treat.

There are a few mouth-watering clashes and maybe its because of the lockdown but this championship is eagerly looked forward to.

Champions Sarsfields will look to hold on to their crown and face a strong Glen Rovers challenge while Newcestown in their first senior year will face the might of Killeagh.

It’s almost an annual event now the meeting of St Finbarr's and Douglas and they never fail to excite us while Milford and Inniscarra in particular will be anxious to reach the pinnacle once again.

We have four weeks to wait before throw-in.

The championship pairings are as follows:

Round 1:

Seandún v Carbery; Winners v Imokilly; Overall winner to round three.

Round 2:

(D) Courcey Roves v Cloughduv; (E) Killeagh v Newcestown; (F) Milford v Éire Óg; (G) Ballincollig v Inniscarra; (H) Glen Rovers v Sarsfields; (I) St Finbarr's v Douglas; (J) Ballygarvan v St Catherine's.

Losers Round:

I v G; E v runners-up of divisional-round; D v H; F v J.

There are 17 teams participating in the senior championship, 14 clubs and three divisions.

While no fixtures have been finalised, the championship will start the weekend of July 24 so all clubs have been put on notice. There will be extra time in all games and if the sides are still deadlocked at that point further extra time will take place until a winner is determined.

Mary McSweeney, chairperson of the county board, asked that clubs work with them during these unprecedented times as venues and referees will be at a premium.

The three divisional sides are Seandún, Carbery and Imokilly, and they play their own mini championship in round 1. Seandún are drawn against Carbery and the winners play Imokilly.

The overall winner advances to round three while the runners up will move to the losers round.
Typically, the divisional sides get one chance to advance but on this occasion, possibly to balance the numbers, the runners-up get a second bite at the cherry and advance to the losers round.

Let the games begin.
