Cork County Council is expected to submit a planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála next month for the N72/N73 Mallow relief road.

The project is progressing through phase three — design and environmental evaluation — under Transport Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) guidelines.

Cork County Council is expected to submit the preliminary business case to TII in November, seeking approval to proceed with the submission of the planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála the following month.

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said that the latest update from TII is a milestone for a project that will be “transformative” for Mallow and the wider North Cork region.

Mr O’Shea said: “I am very pleased to see the Mallow relief road continuing to move forward and, importantly, that we now have a clear target of December this year for the planning application to be submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála.”

“The Mallow relief road is one of the most important infrastructure projects for Mallow and the wider North Cork region.

“It has the potential to significantly improve traffic flows, reduce congestion, improve road safety and connectivity, and support the continued economic development of Mallow and surrounding communities.”

Thousands of people travel regularly into and through Mallow for work, education, healthcare, business, shopping, and other services.

“Improving traffic flows and connectivity in Mallow will, therefore, have a positive knock-on effect for communities right across North Cork and beyond.”
