Cork County Council issued 23 statutory notices under the Derelict Sites Act this year, including notices to place properties on the register, compel works and seek payment of derelict-sites levies.

More than 40 vacant and derelict properties across West Cork are being examined for possible addition to Cork County Council’s Cork County Council’s Derelict Sites Register.

The figure is contained in the latest report to West Cork Municipal District, which shows that 26 properties are already on the register.

Dunmanway has the highest number of registered sites, with eight. Bantry, Clonakilty and Skibbereen each have four.

In Clonakilty, the listed sites include 12 Ashe Street, a property at Astna Street, the old garage and pumps on Clarke Street, and the Old Linen Hall on Connolly Street.

Skibbereen’s four registered sites are at 47 Mardyke Street, 20 Cork Road, 14 Bridge Street and an old shed on Upper Bridge Street. A further five properties in Skibbereen and three in Clonakilty are being considered for possible addition to the register. Schull has six sites under examination, followed by Baltimore and Drimoleague with four each.

The council is using a range of measures to bring properties back into use, including engagement with owners, sales processes, works, planning applications and statutory notices.

One Clonakilty property has been sold following engagement with the council’s town regeneration officer, while another has been listed for sale.

Two Clonakilty properties have been approved for activation under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund’s Vacancy and Dereliction Programme, with engagement with the owners under way.

The report also records one active planning application in Clonakilty and four further properties at pre-planning stage following council engagement.

Across West Cork, works have been completed at two properties following engagement with the council, while work is under way at a further 13. Seven properties have been sold and 16 listed for sale.
