An assessment of where to locate a new fire station in the south west of Cork city is due in the coming weeks.
Labour councillor Ciara O’Connor asked at Monday’s council meeting for an update on the proposed new Cork city fire station for the south west of the city, including the indicative timeline for progressing the project to construction and opening.
The need for a new fire station in the south west of the city was identified in the Cork City Fire Cover Review Report, published in June 2025, and listed as an immediate priority.
David Joyce, the council’s director of emergency management and climate action, said that the site evaluation process for the new south west fire station is currently underway.
“This process commenced earlier in the year and is progressing well.
“It is expected that the related assessment report will be completed early next month," he said.
He added that this site evaluation forms a critical component of the overall submission which the city council will be making to the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) for next stage approval in this project.
Following NDFEM approval to move to the next stage, the city council will procure a design team to progress the preliminary design of the new fire station and advance the planning approval stages of the project.
