A large amount of cash was allegedly snatched from an open cash register at a Cork city supermarket.
It is alleged that a man snatched €1,710 in cash from a till at the Lidl supermarket on Bishopstown Road, with DPP directions awaited in the case.
Eddie O’Donoghue, aged 34, of Cork Simon Community, is charged with carrying out this burglary at Lidl along with other offences.
The background to the supermarket case was outlined at Cork District Court.
On May 3 2025, a Lidl staff member had her till open and unattended while dealing momentarily with another customer. A male customer came over and put his hand into the till and removed a large number cash notes.
The man then put this money into his pocket.
The staff member initially didn't realise anything was amiss and served the male suspect as normal.
About 15 minutes later, she discovered there was a large number of cash notes missing from her till and she called the manager on duty.
CCTV showed the male stealing the cash from the till. Gardaí were contacted and it was established that €1,710 cash notes had been stolen from the till.
The customer was gone by the time the incident was discovered and the cash was not recovered.
The accused faces a number of other charges. These include the alleged theft of a Marymount Hospice donation box containing about €200 from Vibes and Scribes on April 6, the theft of goods worth €55 from Dillon's Cross Pharmacy on June 15, handling a stolen mobile phone at Crosses Green on July 3, and a burglary at Sun Studio Tan and Nail Clinic on Pope's Quay on July 18, during which it is alleged that €1,000 in cash was stolen.
On the application of Sergeant John Dineen, Judge David Waters adjourned the case until October 22 to allow time for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
