Cork library installs special digital hub offering information on work of European Union

The largest town in Cork county has become the first place in Southwest Ireland to install a special digital hub which will allow people to connect directly with just about everything the European Union is doing and even ask specific questions from its officials.

The ‘Europe Direct’ hub was appropriately opened at Carrigaline library by the locally based EU commissioner for democracy, justice, the rule of law and consumer protection, Michael McGrath.

One of eight such centres now operational in Ireland, it will serve as a hub for conversations about Europe, creating opportunities for community engagement and activities that showcase the European dimension of our everyday lives.

It aims to strengthen the connection between EU institutions and citizens by providing information on EU policies, rights, opportunities, and initiatives.

Mr McGrath said Europe Direct is about bringing Europe closer to people by providing trusted information, creating opportunities for dialogue, and helping citizens understand the rights and opportunities that come with EU membership.

“I hope this centre will become a welcoming and vibrant place where people of all ages can engage with European issues and see how decisions made at EU level connect with their everyday lives here in Cork,” he said.

Mr McGrath took questions from a number of students from Carrigaline Community School, who were among the guests at the launch.

He encouraged them to use the hub, saying they are the future of the EU which he expects to expand in the coming years.

Mr McGrath said the EU is bringing in legislation “to make it much safer for minors online. At the moment it’s not a totally safe environment”.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Fianna Fáil councillor Bernard Moynihan, said: “As we hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union this year, this launch is particularly significant.

“I encourage everyone to make use of this excellent new resource and take part in some of the events and activities on offer.”

He said a diverse programme of free events for all ages will take place throughout the year, offering opportunities to learn, engage, and connect with the European Union.

“These will include a European-themed public speaking competition, storytelling events, French language classes, activities and discussions about climate action and sustainability, and other issues that impact local communities,” Mr Moynihan added.
