Woman accused theft of almost €1,400 of jewellery from Cork city centre shop

A young woman accused of shoplifting appears to have “targeted” almost €1,400 worth of jewellery, a district court judge said.

Judge David Waters warned 25-year-old Casandra Constantin that if she did not comply with the directions of the Probation Service in respect of sentencing for an earlier theft, then she would be at risk of being remanded in custody at Limerick Prison until the case was finalised.

“It seems this [latest charge] was a very targeted, deliberate theft of almost €1,400 worth of jewellery,” Judge Waters said.

The accused, who was represented by solicitor Shane Collins-Daly, was remanded on bail until October 20.

Sergeant David Fleming outlined the allegations that gave rise to the charge in relation to the jewellery.

“On February 16, gardaí were called to the Kilkenny shop on Emmet Place,” he said.

“Gardaí met with the manager of the shop who stated that a woman had entered the store at around 12.30pm and made her way to a display cabinet which contained jewellery. The woman then proceeded to place multiple items into a bag in her possession items to the value of €1,373.

“No property was recovered from this incident. She then exited the store, passing all points of payment without making any attempt to pay. Gardaí were able to identify her as 25-year-old Casandra Constantin.”

She is also before the court in respect of other shoplifting offences. The judge was told that the Probation Service report found that there was only minimal engagement from the young woman.

Sgt Fleming said DPP directions on the Kilkenny shop charge were imminent. Judge Waters adjourned the case until October 20 for that purpose.
