Douglas couple Diego and Denis to spend Traitors' winnings on honeymoon

Cork city got its first Traitors Ireland winner on Tuesday night when medic Diego Caixeta took the crown with fellow faithful Anna, after banishing their final two opponents — traitors Carla and Pauric O.

Diego, who also revealed to Anna that he was married to fellow contestant Denis Ryan, shared the €45,850 prize pot with the Dublin-based postal worker.

Denis, a psychotherapist and writer, is from Leap in West Cork, and was ‘murdered’ earlier in the series. The couple live in Douglas.

On winning the title, Diego, who works in surgery in CUH, said he intended to spend his share of the cash — €22,925 — on a honeymoon with his husband.

He told RTÉ on Wednesday that he had not yet organised it. “We are still planning it,” he added.

He also revealed that in his former role, in a nursing home in Dublin, one of his first patients was the Irish painter Louis le Brocquy.

“He was such a beautiful man, I felt very privileged,” he said.

Meanwhile, Denis is calling on people across Cork to sign up and host a coffee morning event in support of Marymount, following his experience with the hospice during his uncle’s illness.

The appeal has a particularly personal significance for the West Cork man, following the loss of his uncle Denis to cancer. 

“Denis was only in Marymount for a short time before he died, but I will forever be grateful to the care, respect, and dignity provided by the incredible staff,” he said.
