Cork traffic and weather: Gardaí commence national slow down day 

Met Éireann has predicted bright and breezy spells to start off this week, with temperatures reaching up to 18C on Monday.

The national forecaster said there will be a chance of rain showers later this afternoon as cloud increases from the west.

Temperatures will reach between 15C and 18C in moderate westerly winds, before dropping to lows of 9C and 14C with light moderate southwesterly breezes overnight.

This evening will also see cloudy conditions with the odd shower.

Tuesday will be rather cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving eastwards, turning heavier and more persistent later in the day.

Low cloud and mist is also predicted in places too.

Highest temperatures will range between 16C to 18C with a light to moderate southwesterly breeze.

Tuesday night will become wet and breezy with rain moving up from the southwest, turning heavy at times.

Along the Atlantic coast, it will feel humid, with lowest temperatures of 13C to 15C degrees, with moderate to fresh southwest winds, being strong and gusty at times.

Traffic 

Meanwhile traffic in Cork remains light this morning with commuters travelling freely along major transport links such as the N40, the M28 and along the Dunkettle Interchange.

An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders, will also carry out a 24-hour nationwide speed enforcement operation from today as part of National Slow Down Day.

The initiative will run for a 24-hour period, aiming to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions nationwide.

The initiative coincides with the first full week of schools reopening across the country when there will be higher volumes of traffic on our roads.

On this operation there will also be a specific focus in relation to traffic activity in the vicinity of schools at opening and closing times.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said with an increase in road use comes a higher risk of fatal or serious injury road traffic collisions.

“These operations serve to remind motorists of the serious risks associated with excessive or inappropriate speed, promote greater compliance with speed limits and support efforts to deter and detect dangerous driving behaviours,” they said.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland has further advised that there will be no closures at the Jack Lynch Tunnel this week.

National outlook 

Met Éireann said it will turn drier over Munster by Wednesday morning, which will start off as breezy day with cloud and rain clearing northeastwards.

While there will be a mix of showers following from the southwest, it will be warmer than previous days with highest temperatures of 18C to 22C, with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

There will be some bright or sunny spells and a few showers for Thursday before wet weather becomes widespread from the Atlantic later in the day or overnight.

Highest temperatures will range between 18C and 21C degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds, easing later in the afternoon.

Current indications suggest it will remain unsettled into next weekend and it will turn a bit cooler and fresher too.
