Two Cork food firms served with prohibition orders by safety authority

Two Cork businesses have been served prohibition orders by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

Ocras, based at Unit H West Cork Business & Technology Park in Clonakilty, was served with a prohibition order under the FSAI Act 1998.

Separately, a prohibition order was served against Rebel Ice Cream at Unit 4 Cherrywood Business Park, Harbour Point, Little Island, under European Union regulations.

In the case of Ocras, the company was directed that specific chicken portions, sausage portions, whitefish portions, lamb portions, beef portions, and bacon portions “involve, or are likely to involve, a serious risk to public health from the said batches of foods”.

It was directed that the food must not be used for human consumption, and be recalled from sale or distribution, “whether or not the food is on sale or has been distributed for sale”.

The reason for making the order were given as: “The products have been processed at an establishment which has not been approved for processing products of animal origin.”

Rebel Ice Cream was directed to destroy three batches of product, consisting, respectively, of 27 cases, eight cases, and 97 cases.

Listing evidence of non-compliance, the inspector stated: “The food business operator did not maintain an adequate list of food suppliers to his food business and in particular with regards to the food supplier of a quantity of ice cream marked as ‘Not For EU’.”
