App-controlled candle created by Kinsale entrepreneur wins national backing

A Kinsale entrepreneur who has developed an app-controlled scented LED candle designed to recreate the ambience of a traditional candle without the flame or waste has been selected for a prestigious national business development programme.
Laura Lyons, founder of Sónua, is one of 25 businesses chosen for the inaugural Kilkenny Design Makers' Academy, which supports emerging Irish makers through mentoring and retail opportunities.
Supported by Cork County Council's Local Enterprise Office Cork North & West, Ms Lyons will take part in workshops, one-to-one mentoring, and business coaching, while also gaining retail experience through pop-up opportunities in Kilkenny Design stores nationwide.
Ms Lyons said the programme would provide valuable opportunities to develop the business.
“Being selected for the inaugural Kilkenny Design Makers’ Academy is a fantastic opportunity for my business," she said.
“The programme will allow me to learn from experienced mentors, develop new skills, and gain valuable retail insights as I continue to grow the Sónua brand.
“I’m also looking forward to showcasing my products at the National Ploughing Championships and connecting with customers from across the country.”
The National Ploughing Championships take place in Screggan, Tullamore, Co Offaly, on September 15-17.
