Completion date sought for 'vital' North Cork wastewater project 

Although the first phase of a €3.5m project to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure in Mitchelstown has been completed, a Cork county councillor has called on Uisce Éireann to provide a timeline for completion.

A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said that the investment will support “future social and economic development” in the town, including new homes in the North Cork heartland south of the Galtees.

The upgrade will increase wastewater treatment capacity, delivering more reliable, sustainable, and high-quality wastewater services for the community, the spokesperson said.

The first phase upgraded the gravity sewer main on Clonmel Rd and will be followed by works on the wastewater pumping station.

Welcoming the completion of the first stage of the project, Fianna Fáil Cork county councillor Deirdre O’Brien told The Echo that the overall completion of the project in Mitchelstown will be vital for the future development of the town.

“I have a motion going in at the northern committee meeting in September. What I have outlined in the motion is that I will be looking for a timeline and a more detailed update of the project. We are further away from all the industry, like Ringaskiddy and Little Island.

“We have our own little industries here and we are very much an agricultural area. So it is vital for them to keep operating as well.”

On the completion of the first phase of the Mitchelstown wastewater project, Uisce Eireann programme manager, Christine Power, added: “We are delighted to have delivered the first phase of works in this vital project and to be facilitating social and economic growth in the town.”

“This is the first of a series of wastewater projects that are set to be undertaken in Mitchelstown over the coming years, highlighting our commitment to the development of the town.”

The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Ward and Burke Construction, with the project due to be completed in late 2027.
