Eclipse glasses to be made free as Cork 'best city' to see once-in-generation event
Free public eclipse activities will take place from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory (above), Tramore Valley Park and Bell's Field.
Munster Technological University is making 6,500 free solar eclipse glasses available in time for the once-in-a-generation deep partial solar eclipse on Wednesday August 12.
Cork is Ireland's best-positioned city for the event, with approximately 96% of the sun expected to be covered by the moon at maximum eclipse at approximately 7.13pm.
MTU's Blackrock Castle Observatory is encouraging the public to collect appropriate glasses, plan a location with a clear western view and follow expert safety guidance throughout the eclipse.
Free public eclipse activities will also take place from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory, Tramore Valley Park and Bell's Field, in collaboration with Cork City Council and in support of the Night-Time Economy and After Hours at the Museum initiative.
Glasses will be available from Blackrock Castle Observatory before August 12, with additional locations set to be announced later this week.
