A Cork man arrested for public intoxication and threatening and abusive behaviour for “roaring and shouting at a house” wants to address his addiction issues, the district court has heard.
Garda Finbarr Russell told Bandon District Court that he responded to a call received at Bandon Garda Station just after midnight on March 2, 2026.
When he arrived at Castledon Estate, Deerpark, Bandon, he encountered a man standing in the road in what appeared to be a highly intoxicated condition.
Garda Russell said the man — identified as 22-year-old Kian Ryan of Richmond Court, Bandon — was “shouting and roaring” at a house whose residents were known to him.
The court heard that Ryan was “extremely abusive” when gardaí tried to speak to him and they formed the opinion that he was intoxicated.
Ryan had to be handcuffed as he continued to behave in a highly aggressive manner and was taken to Bandon Garda Station. The court was told that Ryan has 28 previous convictions, 11 of which were for public order offences.
Myra Dinneen, defending, said that Ryan was pleading guilty to the charges. She said that her client had ongoing addiction problems with alcohol, drugs, and prescriptions and now accepts that “he has to do something about it”.
The court was told that Ryan was recovering from a broken jaw and lived with his grandmother in Bandon.
Ms Dinneen said that Ryan wanted to enter residential treatment and had engaged with the Probation Service over a number of years.
Judge Andrew Cody noted that Ryan had failed to attend a number of appointments with addiction services which Ms Dineen said was due to his recovery from the broken jaw.
Ryan was convicted of threatening and abusive behaviour and sentenced to three months in prison suspended for three years.
The public intoxication charge was taken into consideration.
