Work has officially commenced on Inis, a new indoor all-weather visitor attraction on Oileán Cléire, Cape Clear Island, that will bring to life the island’s unique history, culture and maritime heritage.

Costing a total of more than €1m, the new indoor all-weather visitor attraction on Cape Clear Island (Oileán Cléire) off the coast of West Cork is beginning to take shape.

Named ‘Inis’, the centre will provide a year-round visitor experience, designed to extend the tourism season of the island, enhance the visitor experience and deliver significant economic and cultural benefits to local businesses and communities.

With a planned opening to the public in 2027, the experience will bring together the ancient past of the island, its maritime heritage and the lived experiences of its people.

Teardrop of Ireland

It will also tell the iconic story of the nearby stunning architectural feat – the Fastnet Lighthouse – known as the ‘teardrop of Ireland’ because it was often the last sight of land that those emigrating would see from the ships taking them to the Americas.

The project is being delivered through the strategic partnership between Fáilte Ireland and Údarás na Gaeltachta and in collaboration with Comharchumann Chléire Teo, a not for profit development company run by the Cléire island community. The experience will also provide a comprehensive island orientation, encouraging visitors to explore Cléire and discover its archaeological and natural wonders.

The project is being progressed as a key initiative under the West Cork destination and experience development plan, aligning local ambition with regional tourism development priorities.

Compelling new addition

Head of product development (attractions) at Fáilte Ireland, Mary Stack, said Inis will be “a compelling new addition to Ireland’s visitor offering, providing a high quality indoor experience that celebrates the rich history, culture and maritime heritage on Oileán Cléire.

“As a year-round attraction, it will bring meaningful benefits to the island community by supporting local businesses, sustaining employment and encouraging greater engagement with the island throughout the year.

“This reflects our commitment to working in partnership with Údarás na Gaeltachta and local stakeholders to deliver tourism that strengthens communities and enhances quality of life,” said Ms Stack.

Tomás Ó Síocháin, CEO at Údarás na Gaeltachta added: “This centre will give visitors a genuine window into gaeltacht life on Oileán Cléire and story of the Fastnet.”
