A therapy service for families impacted by drug and alcohol addiction has been launched in Cork by Coolmine Therapeutic Community

The opening was at the Teaghlach Family Service premises in Gurranabraher.

Funded by HSE drug-and-alcohol service and the Cork and Kerry Drug and Alcohol Task Force, Teaghlach provides a wraparound therapeutic service for parents, children, and caregivers. The service works with the addict’s family, ensuring each individual receives tailored support within a safe environment.

The therapy service also strengthens family wellbeing by reducing the stress of addiction, supporting healing and recovery, and helping to break intergenerational cycles.

Teaghlach will provide parenting-under-pressure (PUP) therapy, play therapy, and art therapy, all focused on recovery and improved family outcomes.

Importance of early intervention

The launch was attended by local ministers and councillors, who praised Coolmine Therapeutic Community, while also acknowleding the importance of investing in early intervention and family support services within local communities.

Jerry Buttimer, community development state minister, said of the collaborative work taking place between community services and healthcare providers: “Teaghlach is an excellent example of what can be achieved when communities, healthcare services, and organisations work together to provide compassionate and practical support for families.

“This service will make a real difference in the lives of parents, children, and caregivers who are navigating incredibly difficult circumstances.

“I want to commend Coolmine Therapeutic Community and the HSE for their commitment to delivering a service that is centred on dignity, recovery, and hope.”

Pauline McKeown, CEO of Coolmine Therapeutic Community, added: “This open day for Teaghlach is to highlight the significant support it gives families across Cork who are affected by addiction.

"We are incredibly proud to see Teaghlach become a place where families can heal, rebuild resilience, and move forward together with confidence and support.”
