HSE says transport options to special schools in Cork are still ‘problematic’

The HSE has said it is working with Local Link providers to facilitate transport arrangements for special schools.

The HSE has said it is working with Local Link providers to facilitate transport arrangements for special schools, as a lack of services “remains problematic” for families across Cork.

At the latest HSE South West Regional Health Forum, a spokesperson for the organisation said while the provision of transport for such services comes under the remit of the National Transport Authority (NTA), it is “exploring arrangements” with other outlets to relieve pressure on families in need.

According to HSE figures, there are 18 special schools aligned with children’s disability network teams across the South West region, with almost 1,200 students enrolled.

The majority of these students, 1,046, are registered across 16 special schools in Cork, with the remaining 148 enrolled across two special schools in Kerry.

“Transport for individuals attending day services remains a significant challenge for families and agencies,” the HSE spokesperson said. “The HSE does not have access to funding for transport for special schools, or other critical areas, such as transport to day service/rehabilitative training places for school leavers and other adults.

“The HSE South West day services team continues to work with agencies and families to identify solutions,” they added. “While once-off funding has been provided for transport initiatives, including the purchase of two vehicles for Cork and Kerry, the absence of sustained funding for individualised transport arrangements, particularly those requiring transport escorts, remains problematic.

“Agencies have indicated that they can no longer provide transport solutions for new school leavers due to the complexity and cost of managing fleets and escorts.

“The HSE is exploring arrangements with Local Link and other providers to maximise access for families unable to provide transport due to work, age, or other commitments.”
