A motion to name the Foreshore Walk in Schull in honour of the late Dr Larry O’Connor was supported at a recent meeting of Cork County Council’s West Cork Municipal District.

The motion was proposed by Fine Gael councillor Caroline Cronin, stating that it is “in recognition of his outstanding service to the people of the Mizen peninsula and beyond for over 35 years as a dedicated local GP”.

Ms Cronin said: “He was widely respected for his skill, dedication, kindness, and beyond his medical work he was an active member of the Schull Development Association and was the first chairman of the board of management at Schull Community College and played a key role in the development of our secondary school.”

She said that naming the foreshore walk in Dr O’Connor’s memory would be a fitting and lasting tribute to his lifetime of service and reflect the deep respect that is still felt for him in the local community.

Supporting the motion, Independent Ireland’s Danny Collins said Dr O’Connor was a lovely person, and a great man for the people of Schull and Mizen and “served the people well”.

Municipal district officer Eimear O’Neill said Cork County Council would progress the proposal, subject to the agreement of the elected members and with the consent of Dr O’Connor’s family.

Ms Cronin welcomed her colleagues’ support for the proposal.

She also welcomed an additional €50,000 in funding secured to extend the foreshore walkway.
