Anthony Coleman, director of services with LAWPRO, said they are hoping to engage as many people as possible at the meeting, “because public participation and support are key to achieving water-quality improvements”.

A public meeting in Midleton next week will focus on the protection of rivers, lakes, estuaries, and ground and coastal waters across East Cork.

Hosted by the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO), next Tuesday’s meeting will highlight the need for improvement works, showcase works that have already been completed, and encourage public engagement with future projects.

Under Ireland’s Water Action Plan, LAWPRO works in areas where water quality requires protection or restoration.

At the meeting, representatives will detail to attendees works that were completed under the second cycle of the action plan in East Cork, as well as projects planned for the third cycle.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and to talk to members of the Agricultural Sustainability Support and Advisory Programme (ASSAP).

Anthony Coleman, director of services with LAWPRO, said they are hoping to engage as many people as possible at the meeting, “because public participation and support are key to achieving water-quality improvements”.

“As we are coming to the end of second-cycle work in the East Cork Municipal District area, and beginning implementation of the new Water Action Plan, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome members of the public to come along and find out more about what’s happening in their local waterbodies and river catchments,” said Mr Coleman.

“We would also like to thank all those, whether in a voluntary or paid capacity, working in their local areas to help make a difference to their natural waters and the biodiversity that live in and around them.”

The meeting will take place at the Talbot Hotel in Midleton from 7.30pm, with refreshments available from 7pm
