Youghal artist to exhibit nature-inspired paintings in West Cork
Diane Magee with one of her paintings
An exhibition of paintings by Youghal-based artist Diane Magee will open in West Cork this week.
Forecasters is the third solo show of paintings from Ms Magee, focusing on animals and their relationships with their surroundings, their environment, and the climate.
A series of ten new, richly-layered paintings, the theme of Forecasters is inspired by the weather lore of the animals used as cues for changes in weather.
Barking foxes or soaring swallows foreshadowed fine weather, a braying donkey heralded the rain, while huddled sheep, or seagulls heading inland, meant trouble.
Ms Magee’s latest show features familiar Irish animals, with an imaginative, supernatural quality.
In Forecasters the animal subjects are shaped by and responsive to human destruction. In this show, animals are the guides, the ones with the knowledge and insight, the ones who can still read the signs.
The show opens in Cnoc Buí Arts Centre, Union Hall, West Cork on Thursday April 2, and runs until Sunday April 19.
