Bail was refused on Tuesday in in the case against a 31-year-old man who was allegedly sitting in a car outside his address in Cork with over €600,000 worth of cannabis.

Derek Kavanagh, of 69 Arderrin Way, the Glen, Cork, appeared by video link from prison at Cork District Court where he made his bail application through solicitor Frank Buttimer.

Mr Buttimer said the accused had not applied for bail when he first went into custody following his arrest last month as he was keen to address his addiction issues in custody.

On Tuesday, he did apply for bail.

Derek Kavanagh said that he attended Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous and other rehabilitation services in prison and wanted to continue with this treatment in the community.

Sergeant John Dineen said gardaí were not satisfied that the accused had become clear of addictions after 27 days in custody.

Detective Garda Rory Fogarty said that by the defendant’s own admission following his arrest, he had a €28,000 drugs debt. On the day he was caught with the drugs, the stash of over 30 kilos of cannabis with a street value of €610,000 had been dropped to him by unnamed parties who told him he was to store the drugs.

Det Garda Fogarty said: “Gardaí strongly believe that if granted bail he will continue his involvement with drugs to pay off his drugs debt.”

Judge Valerie Corcoran refused bail and remanded him in custody for directions from the DPP.

Derek Kavanagh is charged in relation to the alleged seizure of €610,000 worth of cannabis in a search in Cork that followed the search of property connected to another man.

He was charged by Det Garda Rory Fogarty with possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis for sale or supply at Arderrin Way, the Glen, Cork, on January 22.

Det Garda Fogarty of the Cork City Divisional Drugs Squad gave evidence of arrest, charge, and caution and told the court that Mr Kavanagh made no reply to either charge after caution.

He was remanded in custody until March 16.
