Cork companies are being invited to register for the 2026 Interfirm Dragon Boat Challenge, with the charity fundraiser taking place on Saturday, April 18.

The event is organised by Meitheal Mara, the Cork community boatyard and maritime training centre, with all proceeds supporting its social inclusion programmes.

The race on the River Lee sees teams paddling a 250m course from the Port of Cork sign to the Lapp’s Quay boardwalk.

Each team has 17 people per boat, consisting of 16 paddlers and a drummer.

Teamwork

A training session will take place in advance of race day to ensure that all teams feel confident and ready to compete.

“Dragon boat racing is the ultimate test of teamwork,” said Geri Murphy, maritime events manager for Meitheal Mara.

“You can’t win unless everyone works together. It’s incredible to see colleagues transform into a single, focused crew — and even better knowing that their effort supports Meitheal Mara’s work in the community.”

Companies interested in taking part in this team building event in support of a good cause are asked to register their teams as soon as possible, with spots limited and filled on a first come, first served basis. Past editions of the race have seen participation from the likes of Pfizer, Amazon, and Cork City Council.

Fundraiser

Started in 2013, the event is an important fundraiser for Meitheal Mara, a local charity in the heart of Cork city.

Meitheal Mara is dedicated to promoting and fostering maritime culture and traditional skills through currach and wooden boat building, as well as woodwork and seamanship as a means to help groups of people and individuals to learn, progress, and develop.

Meitheal Mara also provides training to people who are at risk of social exclusion such as young people, those recovering from addictions, and people living with disabilities.
