A man died after being struck by a train on the rail line between Cork City and Mallow last night.

The incident happened at approximately 4.40pm on Thursday.

All train services between Cork and Mallow were suspended for a time but services have now resumed.

Approximately 164 passengers were on board the train, which was the 2pm Dublin-to-Cork service.

They were transferred from the scene by another train, Irish Rail confirmed.

Bus transfers operated between Kent Railway Station in Cork City and Mallow, where passengers connected with onward services.

Emergency services remained at the scene for a time and the area was sealed for a garda investigation.
