Cork county councillor Peter O’Donoghue has announced he is joining the Aontú political party.

A native of Kilworth, Mr O’Donoghue was first elected as an Independent councillor to Cork County Council in June of 2024.

Speaking about his decision to join the party, Mr O’Donoghue outlined how he feels Aontú aligns with his own values.

“We have too much top down dictation in political parties, at national government level and at European government level, for too long,” he said. “The only way to counteract this and to bring power back to the people, is through grassroots organisations such as Aontú.”

The Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín said he believes that Mr O’Donoghue could contest and win a seat in the Cork East constituency for Dáil Éireann.

“Cork East has now become a target seat for Aontú and we will work day and night to ensure that Peter O’Donoghue gives the people of Cork East a real voice in Leinster House,” Mr Tóibín said.
