A 25-year-old man arrested in Ringaskiddy for allegedly stowing away on a ferry during the Christmas holidays was remanded in custody for a fortnight on Monday.

The defendant, An Do of no fixed address, appeared at Cork District Court.

It is alleged that on the night of December 28 last, gardaí arrested a man for allegedly being a stowaway on a ferry berthed at the terminal in Ringaskiddy.

Garda Jacinta Broderick charged An Do with trespassing on the ship and having no identification documents, as required of him.

Judge Catherine Ryan remanded him in custody on the application of Sergeant Gearóid Davis until January 19. Sgt Davis said directions were awaited in the case from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A Vietnamese interpreter translated proceedings in court for the young man who was represented by solicitor Eddie Burke.
