The Christmas season is now in full flight across our city, and it is truly heartening to see so many events taking place that bring people together in celebration and community spirit.

There are far too many to mention in one journal, but I would like to share a snapshot of what has been a memorable week.

I had the honour of speaking at the blessing of the Share crib on Patrick St.

Year after year, the boys and girls of Share are out in force during the festive season, collecting for a cause that has touched countless lives. Share is a remarkable organisation founded by students in Cork, dedicated to supporting older people through housing, companionship, and intergenerational solidarity.

Their work reminds us of the importance of caring for those who have given so much to our community.

Rotary Tree

We also had the privilege of placing the first name on the Rotary Tree in the presence of an Taoiseach Micheál Martin. This time-honoured tradition continues to raise much-needed funds for Cork-based charities, and it was uplifting to see such strong support for local causes that make a real difference in people’s lives.

Later in the week, the Lady Mayoress Karen organised a visit to the CSPCA, where we witnessed first-hand the incredible work being carried out.

The CSPCA provides shelter, veterinary care, and advocacy for animals in need, ensuring that vulnerable creatures are treated with dignity and compassion.

Their dedication is inspiring, and it was a privilege to meet the staff and volunteers who give so much of themselves to this mission.

Gala Christmas Concert

One of the highlights of my year as lord mayor is hosting the Gala Christmas Concert, and this year was no exception.

It was humbling to see a packed house enjoying performances from some of Cork’s finest talents.

My heartfelt thanks go to concert director Yvonne Coughlan, Tadhg Keating, chairman of the organising committee, and the many staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to create such a magical evening. Proceeds from the concert will support the Alzheimer Society Cork, Shine A Light Cork, and the Samaritans Cork—three organisations whose work is vital to the wellbeing of our city.

Civic reception

Finally, I was deeply honoured to host a civic reception for Cork’s iconic hurler, Patrick “Hoggy” Horgan.

Hoggy is a true sportsman, admired not only for his skill and dedication on the pitch but also for his role as an ambassador for his club and county.

His achievements have brought pride to Cork, and his commitment to the game continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.

This week has been a shining example of the generosity, talent, and spirit that make Cork such a special place at Christmas time.

May I take this opportunity on behalf of the Lady Mayoress and myself to wish everybody a very happy and peaceful Christmas.
