A road safety scheme should be introduced to address a series of dangerous bends on a Cork road that has seen multiple vehicles crashing into walls and pillars of local properties, according to Fine Gael councillor Brendan McCarthy.
Mr McCarthy said the road at Curraghalicky, near Drinagh in West Cork, was very busy with local traffic and was the scene of numerous accidents.
He said that he had been contacted by local residents about the issue and said Cork County Council needed to do something about the issue “before someone loses their life”.
Mr McCarthy proposed a motion to the recent meeting of the council’s West Cork Municipal District which asked “that this council would look as a matter of urgency at implementing a safety scheme and redesign works on the dangerous bends at Curraghalicky, Drinagh, as there are frequent accidents at the location on this very busy road”.
Seconding the motion, Independent Ireland councillor Daniel Sexton said he was also aware of safety issues on the stretch of road and asked for the erection of warning signs to warn motorists of the band bends as they approached.
Fianna Fáil councillor Joe Carroll said he had travelled the road for many years and was not aware of the issue. He said there were many bad bends all along the road.
Area engineer John Ahern said the section of road has been included in a list of schemes for which funding has been applied for under the 2026 low cost safety improvement programme.
