Cork man Tim Kelleher has been named as the Irish Red Cross volunteer of the year — with two more Cork volunteers recognised for their years of dedicated service at this year’s Irish Red Cross National Volunteer Awards.
The awards ceremony at Croke Park was attended by Irish Red Cross volunteers from across the country, as well as the organisation’s chairman Charlie Flanagan.
The event, MC’d by TV presenter and Ireland AM weather man Deric Hartigan, celebrated volunteers who give their time and expertise to Ireland’s humanitarian organisation.
Mr Kelleher, who has been a volunteer for 17 years with the Irish Red Cross Clonakilty branch, was awarded volunteer of the year, with his branch colleague Pascal Walsh honoured with a lifetime achievement award.
Cork woman Imelda O’Connor, from the Ballinora/Ballincollig first aid unit, also received a lifetime achievement award.
Both Ms O’Connor and Mr Walsh were recognised for 50 years of volunteer service.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Flanagan said the awards is a “really special day in the Irish Red Cross calendar”.
“Our National Volunteer Awards is an opportunity to recognise the selfless commitment of our volunteers, all of whom deserve our gratitude and appreciation for everything they do in their communities,” said Mr Flanagan.
“They are the beating heart of the Irish Red Cross, and the very best of us. Thank you sincerely for taking positive action to make your community a better, kinder place and helping those most in need.
“Your commitment and selflessness is truly inspiring. What is really heartening is how you encourage younger volunteers — sharing your expertise and knowledge with the next generation. The future of the Irish Red Cross looks bright thanks to volunteers like you.”
Liam Maguire, chair of the Irish Red Cross volunteer support and development working group, congratulated all volunteers nominated and awarded at this year’s ceremony.
“These awards demonstrate how all Irish Red Cross volunteers go above and beyond the call of duty for their community,” said Mr Maguire. “I want to thank all our volunteers across the country for their quiet but effective volunteering which has such a positive impact on their communities.”
Award winners were chosen from nominations submitted by fellow volunteers and the general public.
