Clogheen Kerry Pike Community Association welcomed minister of state Jerry Buttimer, TD Colm Burke, senator Garret Kelleher and councillor Damien Boylan recently to show them the plans for their new Community Hub.
The hub includes public toilets for those who use Ballycannon Park. The national school use the park daily, but currently children who need to use a toilet have to be walked back to the school by two teachers.
The hub will include a community room for local groups and clubs, and a potential commercial premises which will generate income to help with running costs, for which expressions of interest have been received.
In addition to the national school, the local GAA club Gleann na Laoi no longer run their popular summer camps in the village due to a lack of facilities, while Ballycannon Tennis Club are having similar difficulties.
The village received a grant of €154k last year and is currently fundraising to get the project off the ground, but locals will need to get additional funding and are hoping the visit by the four Fine Gael politicians will help this.
They are currently running a GoFundMe to raise €30k: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ballycannon-pavilion.
