Last week the City Division Garda Youth Awards were held at the Rochestown Park Hotel.

The awards honour young people who give back to their community in a variety of ways, whether it be helping young people, older people or groups/clubs.

One such person was David Flynn, who was honoured with a Community Safety Award for his involvement with Douglas GAA Club.

His citation on the night read: “In February 2023 Douglas GAA Club set up ‘The All Stars’. It is a group within the club for children with additional needs.

“This young man has been an integral part of the group since its very first session. His remarkable dedication, positivity and commitment have made him not only a valued participant but an inspiration to everyone involved.

“Over time, he has grown alongside the group and has become an outstanding role model within the club and the wider community.

“His contributions reach far beyond the All Stars Programme.

“He constantly gives his time, energy and enthusiasm to many club and community initiatives; always eager to lend a helping hand.

“These include ‘The Good Friday Club Clean Up’ where he demonstrates reliability and a genuine desire to give back, ‘The Douglas Gives Back Christmas fundraiser’ where he has helped to collect vital funds for three local charities and the ‘Spinathon Giving For Living’ which also raises money for local charities.

“Despite living with Scoliosis, this young man brings with him an incredible spirit, joy and enthusiasm. His positive attitude is infectious and truly captures the hearts of all who know him.

“He is a shining example of youth giving back selflessly, not just to Douglas GAA Club, but to the wider community.

“His kindness, dedication and willingness to help others make him an exceptional role model and a truly deserving candidate for this recognition. He is a worthy winner of this award.”

GAA club make plans for AGM as year comes to an end

Douglas GAA Club’s AGM is taking place on Sunday, November 30, as required by rule.

A spokesperson said: “As was the case last year we conducted a number of review meetings across the club.

“These review meetings provided members with a forum to hear about the season just completed and plans for the season ahead.

“Suggestions and concerns were discussed. Members who are interested in getting involved in committees were also identified.”

One of the key outcomes of the AGM will be to appoint a club executive for the year ahead.

Should any member be interested in getting involved in helping with the administration of the club, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the club secretary secretary.douglas.cork@gaa.ie.

Their annual mass for deceased members and friends also took place last week.

Their fundraising Lotto jackpot now stands at €3,400, and the second prize is €2,500.

This is a very important fundraiser for the club, so why not have a flutter?

You can purchase tickets online through their website, or through the Clubforce Connect App, or you can purchase tickets directly in the club bar in advance of the draw at 9pm every Sunday evening. A direct debit option is available as well.

Also, if anyone is interested in becoming a promoter where you sell a book of 10 tickets each week to family, friends, workmates etc, you are automatically entered into a promoters only draw each Sunday.

Please contact Der Regan on 086 6093083 for further details.

Bus service complaints

Councillor Peter Horgan said that he is in receipt of increasing numbers of complaints regarding the 207 service.

“It is not acceptable for buses to disappear and not show up especially at peak commuter times,” said Mr Horgan. “I have asked senior management in Bus Éireann to examine the operation of the bus and report back on that over the next number of weeks.”
