A memorial walk, in memory of nurse who gave decades of service to those with intellectual disabilities, and who passed away two years, has raised more than €14,000 for charity.

Tricia O’Rourke worked as a nurse in the area of intellectual disability for 42 years, caring for countless people, and bringing comfort and happiness to their lives.

Cancer brought an end to Tricia's life in August 2023, just two years after her retirement.

Her legacy lives on, and a memorial walk continuing her support and empathy for those living with cancer is now in its second year. Last year, the inaugural walk raised €6,812.

During this year’s walk, which was held at Hungry Hill and Glengarriff Nature Park, €7,690 was raised for Cork ARC Cancer Support House.

Founded in 2001, Cork ARC is a Wilton-based charity which provides support for those living with cancer. Over the years, demand for the charity’s services has grown, and in 2017, after years of searching for a larger space, it purchased Sarsfield House on Sarsfield Road.

Following an extensive redevelopment project in 2019, the building became its new home, providing a haven of care where those affected by cancer can find the support they need in a safe and soothing environment.

Cork ARC is this autumn collaborating in a fundraiser with the Irish Lung Cancer Community (ILCC), a patient-led advocacy group providing support, raising awareness, and driving research to improve lung cancer outcomes in Ireland and beyond.

Cork ARC is asking the public to help them to put the focus on Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November.

By taking part in its fundraiser, Step Up for Cork ARC, every step you take can help raise awareness and funds vital for those affected by cancer.

Set your own personal or team step goal from 5,000 a day to 150,000 in a month - whatever feels right for you. Then ask your family, friends, or colleagues to sponsor your journey.

Cork ARC offers the example of 150,000 steps at one cent per step can add up to €1,500 raised.

All funds raised will go towards supporting Cork ARC’s free cancer support services, and your efforts will also shine a light on lung cancer, one of Ireland’s most common cancers.
