Former tánaiste Simon Coveney said he is ‘humbled’ to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from his alma mater, University College Cork, in recognition of his quarter-century of public service.

Mr Coveney, who retired from politics at the end of last year, was conferred at a special ceremony today.

He stepped down as deputy leader of Fine Gael in April 2024, shortly after Leo Varadkar announced he was stepping down as taoiseach and leader of the party.

Mr Coveney, who was first elected to the Dáil in Cork South Central in 1998, served as an MEP for Ireland South from 2004 to 2007, before returning to the Dáil, where he went on to serve as a minister across agriculture, defence, housing, and foreign affairs.

He served as foreign affairs minister during crucial Brexit negotiations between Britain and the EU.

Mr Coveney told The Echo that he was delighted at the honour, and very happy to be in UCC. “It’s a huge privilege for me and my family to get recognised in my own home university, where I was a student one day a long time ago, it’s a really big honour, and I’m humbled by it, to be honest.

“I said a few words to the other graduates today, who worked hard to get where they are, and I encouraged them to use the privilege of the quality of education that they got from UCC to good effect,” he said.

“We’re living in a time when democracy is being threatened in many parts of the world, and universities really are centres of learning, diversity, fact-based research, and decision-making, and it’s probably more important now than ever.”

In his citation, UCC president Professor John O’Halloran said the former agriculture minister had led a landmark reform of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy during Ireland’s EU presidency and launched Origin Green, positioning Ireland as a global leader in sustainable food systems.

“In defence, he oversaw humanitarian naval missions that rescued more than 17,000 migrants in the Mediterranean, exemplifying Ireland’s commitment to global solidarity,” Prof O’Halloran said.

“His tenure as minister for foreign affairs during Brexit was marked by strategic diplomacy, safeguarding both the Good Friday Agreement and Ireland’s place in Europe.

“From Cork to Brussels, Simon Coveney has been a guiding force — an architect of policy, a champion of peace, and a leader whose legacy is defined by service over spectacle.”
