The Ukrainian ambassador to Ireland has said the Ukrainian School Cork has become a vital part of the community in Cork.

The ambassador, Larysa Gerasko, was speaking at the recent ‘first bell ceremony’, a symbolic event marking the official start of the new academic year.

The Ukrainian School Cork is located at the Cork Academy of Music on the North Monastery campus.

Ms Gerasko, who attended the event alongside the Lord Mayor of Cork, councillor Fergal Dennehy, expressed her gratitude to all who have contributed to the creation and growth of what she called “this wonderful cultural and educational space for our children” in Cork.

“Your school has become a vital part of the Ukrainian community in Cork, and I deeply appreciate your commitment and love for our culture, language, and traditions,” she said.

“The school, which was established in November 2022 with the initiative of the ‘Shtab Pivdnya’, has already become an integral part of the Ukrainian community in Cork.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in its creation and continued support — from Cork Academy of Music, where classes are held, to all those who dedicate their time and energy to make this school possible.”

Ms Gerasko added her thanks to Billy O’Callaghan, the manager of the music academy.

Performing at the event were the ‘Voices of Peace’ an intercultural children and young people’s choir, which is supported by the Creative Ireland Programme, the Cork Local Creative Youth Partnership, and Cork ETB’s youth services.

The war waged by Russia against Ukraine has brought immense loss, pain, and suffering, Ms Gerasko said.

“However, this war has also demonstrated the indomitable spirit of Ukrainians. We are fighting, not only for our land and our loved ones, but also for the right to live freely, for the right to be masters of our own land.

“Your work here in Cork is an important part of this struggle because you are preserving Ukrainian culture and heritage in a time when we all must defend our independence.”
