Crosshaven RNLI comes to aid of 13 people over busy weekend in Cork harbour

Crosshaven RNLI volunteers were called out to two yachts in distress over the weekend, and helped 13 people who were aboard.
At 3.31pm on Saturday, pagers were activated, and the volunteers launched within 12 minutes to a report of a yacht disabled two to three miles south of Roches Point. The casualty yacht with eight persons on board had suffered steering failure.
The lifeboat crew of Aidan O'Connor with Alex Barry, Micheal Livingstone and Conor Barry battled three-metre swells to reach the casualty. On arrival, the crew established a stern to tow and began the slow journey back to Crosshaven, arriving at 5pm.
The vessel and crew were safely berthed at Cork Boatyard Marina, before the lifeboat returned to station at 5.30pm. The lifeboat was declared ready for service once more at 6.10pm.
Pagers had earlier been activated at 6.45pm on Friday evening for the volunteer crew. The request to launch was to a yacht near Whitegate refinery.
The RNLI crew of Alan Venner with Alex Barry, Kline Pennefather and Caoimhe Foster launched and found the 10-metre yacht with five people on board which was dis-masted and blowing into shallow water.
The crew decided the priority was to establish a tow of the yacht to more sheltered waters where the mast, rigging and sails were retrieved onboard by the yacht's crew. Once all lines were clear, the yacht was able to start engines and make way to the marina, escorted by the lifeboat.
The lifeboat returned to station, refuelled and washed down before being declared ready for service once more at 9.35pm.
