The Taoiseach has expressed his condolences on the death of West Cork FF councillor Patrick Gerard Murphy.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD said this afternoon that he was deeply saddened to learn of the death of councilor Patrick Gerard Murphy, who represented the Bantry area.

“I am very sorry to learn of the death of my friend, fellow party member and councillor, Patrick Gerard Murphy,” said the Taoiseach.

He recalled how Patrick Gerard was first co-opted to Cork County Council in 2008, filling the seat held by Councillor Donal Casey in Bantry. He was elected in 2009 and re-elected at every subsequent local election since.

“Patrick Gerard was born and grew up on the Beara peninsula,” said Mr Martin. “He played football for Urhan and Beara and throughout his life was committed to the GAA and its ideals.

“Patrick Gerard was a natural public representative. He was a long standing member of West Cork Development Partnership and a founding member of Cork Local Link and Employability West Cork.” In his tribute to his friend, the Taoiseach recalled how Patrick Gerard cared deeply and passionately about his place and the people he represented.

“He advocated for them. Patrick Gerard was passionate about community development and worked tirelessly on behalf of the communities he represented.

“Patrick overcame adversity in his early life with great courage and determination. He continued to advocate for people with disabilities, working with the National Learning Network in Bantry to ensure that those with disabilities were supported and represented.

“Patrick Gerard was warm, positive and inspirational. On a personal basis, I always enjoyed his company and found him friendly, kind and insightful. His was an important and respected voice within the party along with his community and county.

“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Fianna Fáil organisation, I offer my deepest sympathy to Patrick Gerard’s brothers Michael and Noel and his wider family, along with his community in West Cork.”

The popular councillor passed away unexpectedly at his home in Ballylickey, outside Bantry, on Friday, but was originally from Ahabrock, Eyeries in Beara. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised.
