Cork College of Further Education and Training (FET) and Munster Technological University have launched a tertiary degree programme, the BSc in process manufacturing practice and technology, to commence this September.

The three-year programme will meet demand for skilled professionals in the process manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.

This tertiary degree provides an alternative entry mechanism, enabling school leavers, mature learners, and further-education graduates to transition to higher education.

The students will benefit from hands-on, practical training, academic learning, and paid work placements. “This programme is a game-changer for learners and industry alike,” said Gobnait Burke, of the National Tertiary Office.

“It opens doors for those who may not have considered university and ensures graduates are job ready with real-world experience.”

The programme is part of Ireland’s unified tertiary education strategy to build a skilled talent pipeline in manufacturing and life sciences.

John Fitzgibbons, director of further education and training, Cork ETB, said:

“We are excited to be providing a brand-new pathway for learners to enter this exciting sector, and adding to the suite of tertiary degree programmes developed in collaboration with our partners in MTU to meet the needs of learners and specific industry sectors.

"We look forward to welcoming the first learners to the programme in September.“

Seán McSweeney, dean of engineering at MTU, added: “MTU is delighted to continue our deep collaboration with CETB in fulfilling our joint educational mission, in providing education offerings that lead in to higher education for as many as possible.

"This programme will positively change the lives of those undertaking it and lead to greater prosperity for Cork, through enriching the already great talent in the region.”

The course starts on September 15. Apply via the National Tertiary Office website, www.nto.ie, or the Cork College of FET Bishopstown website, www.bishopstowcampus.ie.
