Artist Sophie Longwill has been commissioned by Cork Opera House to commemorate its 170th anniversary with a piece of art.
Having celebrated its 170th anniversary with a gala concert and other events earlier this year, Cork’s Opera House is to mark this significant milestone on the way to its second century with a permanent glass installation which has been commissioned from visual artist, Sophie Longwill.
The commission, which is being supported by Fleetwood Paints in partnership with Sample-Studios, will see the artwork unveiled at the Opera House later this year.
Ms Longwill, who is a member of Sample-Studios, is an award winning artist and has been recognised as one of Europe’s “rising stars” in the Michelangelo Foundation’s Homo Faber Guide. Her winning tender will reflect the Opera House’s role as “a dynamic cultural institution”.
Opera House CEO Eibhlín Gleeson said the commission was “a powerful way to honour our rich history and the many people who have shaped it over the years”.
Fleetwood Paints marketing manager Derek Byrne said the collaboration was “especially meaningful” to the company.
