Cork TD says local post offices need a 'rescue package' to survive

"The local post office provides a lifeline for people, they are often the hub of small communities," said the TD.

A Cork TD has called on the Government to include a rescue package for rural post offices in the upcoming Budget 2026.

Michael Collins, Leader of Independent Ireland and Cork South West TD, warned that without immediate intervention, hundreds of local post offices across the country could face closure.

He also confirmed that he will be writing to the Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance to formally urge them to include a rural post office support package in Budget 2026.

Mr Collins said his office has been contacted by postmasters and postmistresses from rural communities who are concerned and “crying out for support.”

“Without increased support, as many as 40% of rural post offices could close by 2026. This is about more than a service.

"The local post office provides a lifeline for people, they are often the hub of small communities.

“This Government loves to talk about balanced regional development and rural inclusion, well here is their chance to put it into practice.

“Postmasters and postmistresses are doing heroic work, often at personal and financial cost, just to keep the lights on. They need backing, they need certainty and they need it now.”

Mr Collins added:

“We have these buildings, these trusted people and these networks in place. We should be expanding their role, not letting them disappear.”

Citing the importance of post offices in rural areas, Mr Collins highlighted the case of Kealkill in West Cork, where the post office has been operating for the last two decades by the local postmistress ,alongside a family run convenience shop in Burke’s Gala.

“They serve customers from Ballingeary to Dunmanway. They know their community.

“They help neighbours with everything from doctors appointments to reversing the car. That kind of quiet, everyday support is the backbone of rural Ireland.”
