In a statement, An Post said it had been facing the possible closure of the office in September of this year and had been trying to find an alternative contractor to provide post office services there.
"No applications were received for the vacant contract position and circumstances beyond An Post’s control prompted an early that planned closure date," the statement said.
Customers can avail of post office services in Buttevant which is 7.8km away, Castletownroche 11.4km away, Mallow 11.7km and Kildorrery 14km away.
Department of Social Protection customers will be transferred in the first instance to Buttervant post office and will then have the option to access serves at any other post office, An Post said.
"An Post regrets the inconvenience for customers. We will work to assist customers in accessing services in the other post offices locally and in the weeks following the closure of Doneraile," the statement concluded.
