A popular family-owned grocery store in Cork city has announced it is entering into a receivership to ensure the shop’s “viability into the future”.

SuperValu in Hollyhill, which has been owned and operated by the Singleton family for the last 20 years, announced to staff this week that a third party has been appointed as joint receivers of the business.

Speaking to The Echo, a representative from Singleton's SuperValu said that the management team at the store has invited the appointment of Luke Charleton and Alan Large of EY as joint receivers, to take over the operation of the store.

The spokesperson further said that the decision was taken with “a view to restructuring the business to ensure its viability into the future and to preserve employment”.

“Over the years, this store has been at the heart of the community, and we have been deeply involved both in the business and in local life,” they added.

“We are incredibly grateful to our fantastic team and the loyal customers who have supported us.

“It has been a privilege to serve this community for so many years.”

The representative additionally said that the Musgrave Group is “supportive of this decision” and has confirmed it will continue to supply the store throughout the receivership process.

“The store will continue to trade and serve the community with the same commitment from the team,” the spokesperson added.

The news of the receivership comes only two years after the completion of a €2m refurbishment at the facility, which saw the hiring of 20 new staff, the expansion of the store to include new additions, such as a bakery and a bigger off-licence, as well as the implementation of a number of sustainability upgrades, including solar panels, LED lighting, and energy efficient refrigeration doors.
