Condolences have been paid to the family of two pensioners who were found dead in their home in Cork on Monday evening.

The deceased couple, who lived in Glounthaune, were both aged in their 80s, and have been named locally as Anne (80) and Michael O’Sullivan (83).

Members of An Garda Síochána in Mayfield attended the scene at approximately 5pm after welfare concerns were raised by relatives with emergency services.

It is understood that upon arrival at the scene, gardaí discovered two deceased bodies near the stairs within the home.

Speaking to The Echo, Fine Gael Cork North Central TD, Colm Burke, said: “This discovery is very sad for the couple’s immediate family. It’s obviously very sad that this has occurred."

A technical examination was undertaken at the residence in Glounthaune, with gardaí confirming that while foul play is not suspected at this time, a postmortem examination has been arranged at Cork University Hospital (CUH) with the local coroner, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation.

“I would like to offer my condolences to all of Anne and Michael’s family, this is very sad news coming from the Glounthaune community."

Fine Gael Cork East TD, Noel McCarthy, said that he would like to offer his “deepest sympathies” to all impacted by the death of Anne and Michael O’Sullivan.

“I just want to say how sad I was to hear about this tragedy, I am thinking of their family at this very sad time,” said Mr McCarthy.

“My deepest sympathies go out to everyone involved – all their neighbours in the area must be shocked."

Sinn Féin Cork East TD, Pat Buckley said that his thoughts are with the O’Sullivan family following this “massive tragedy”.

“My condolences go out to their immediate and extended family – this is a massive tragedy,” said Mr Buckley.

“In their elder years of life they were together, and now unfortunately in the way it has happened, they have left together as well.

“The good thing is that they will go on to the next place with each other.”
