Two adventurers have set out to make history, as they aim to become the first to canoe around the island of Ireland in aid of good causes.

Rich Ensoll and Johan Hoving from the UK are undertaking a remarkable challenge as they aim to be the first to ever canoe around the entire coastline of Ireland in a handmade, skin-on-frame canoe.

The pair will set off from Crosshaven Marina, on Tuesday morning at 8am, and will continue their journey around the country’s rugged shores to raise funds for Oxfam Ireland and one other cause.

“Canoeing around Ireland is a hopeful exercise on slowing down, embracing the unknown, and reconnecting with nature to raise funds for impactful causes,” said Rich Ensoll, senior lecturer in outdoor studies at the University of Cumbria.

“We will do our very best to weather choppy seas to do our part in making the world a better place.”

Their vessel has been crafted in Ireland by John Wilkinson of Valkyrie Craft, inspired by ancient boat-building traditions that stretch back thousands of years. The canoe’s design echoes the curragh, once a vital link between coastal communities and a symbol of resilience and exploration.

As they paddle, sail, and occasionally sleep, in their canoe; the team will share their journey through an online blog, offering stories, photographs, and reflections from the water.

Johan Hoving, a dynamic outdoor expert, said: “When Rich asked me to join him, I said yes without hesitation. It’s a chance to do something extraordinary and meaningful that only a privileged few can even try.”

Funds raised will support Oxfam Ireland’s work in tackling poverty and injustice, as well as the Kepplewray Trust’s Participation and Inclusion Fund, which helps people of all abilities access outdoor experiences.

Praising the Canoe Around Ireland duo, Oxfam Ireland CEO Jim Clarken, said:

“This journey is a beautiful reminder of how powerful community can be when paired with courage. We’re incredibly grateful to Rich and Johan for choosing to support Oxfam Ireland in such a unique and inspiring way.

Their adventure speaks to the heart of what our organisation strives to stand for — resilience, solidarity, and hope for a better future.

“Oxfam Ireland is proud to be part of this inspiring adventure and wishes Rich and Johan fair winds and calm water as they set out to make history,” Mr Clarken said.
