The adage that a picture is worth a thousand words was never truer than in press photography. The people of Cork have the opportunity to see, in one place, some of the finest examples of news, features, and sports photography that appeared in the national press over the past year, following the opening this week of the AIB Press Photographer of the Year exhibition at Cork City Hall.

Several images taken by The Echo/Irish Examiner snappers featured among the winning entries for the competition on which the exhibition is based, the results of which were announced in February.

The exhibition, which features photographs taken across 11 categories — news, daily life and people, sports action, sports feature, nature and the environment, politics, arts and entertainment, reportage, public relations, and multimedia, as well as sustainability, country life, and best use of technology — was opened this week by Fianna Fáil councillor Fergal Dennehy, Lord Mayor of Cork, and will remain open to the public until Saturday, July 5.

Tribute

As he opened the exhibition in one of the first functions of his tenure as Cork’s first citizen, the Lord Mayor paid tribute to the strong Cork representation among the award-winning photographs.

“The capacity of a photo to get to the truth of a situation, capturing the true emotion of a situation, has always been important, and maybe never more so than now,” he said.

“It is fantastic to see such strong work here in City Hall and to have representation from our own city, who bring our stories to print every day of the week.”

The president of Press Photographers Ireland, David Branigan, described the profession as a “vital component” in keeping people informed about events, from sports to news to the arts.

“The AIB Press Photographer of Year exhibition is unmissable, because these images anchor our reality in an era of fakery, artificial intelligence, and disinformation,” Mr Branigan said.

“We hope that visitors from the local area and beyond will enjoy browsing through the award-winning and highly acclaimed imagery, which demonstrates the hard work and commitment of our Irish press photographers.”

If you cannot get to City Hall before the exhibition closes at the end of next week, the full portfolio can be viewed at
