A Cork university has been named as the official sponsors for Munster’s first LGBTQIA+ inclusive GAA club.

Munster Technological University (MTU) has become the proud official sponsor of Na Laochra Aeracha (NLA) GAA Club—the first LGBTQIA+ inclusive Gaelic games club in the Munster region.

Founded in 2024, Na Laochra Aeracha boasts 80 members from across Munster.

The club offers a welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies to engage in Gaelic sports. Its men’s team is set to compete in the City Division Junior C championship this season, and a women’s team is planned for launch in 2026.

MTU President Professor Maggie Cusack emphasised the alignment between the club’s mission and the university’s values.

“Supporting Na Laochra Aeracha, whose club values include inclusiveness, diversity, community identity, and respect, directly aligns with MTU’s strategic objectives in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

“I am delighted to see that MTU’s GAA offices will offer members coaching, skills development and engagement in club operations. In addition to this, and perhaps of even greater importance, is what the club will offer members in terms of a sense of belonging, a sense of community, and a real sense of pride in themselves just as they are.”

The partnership marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of diversity within the GAA, which in recent years has supported the creation of community-based LGBTQIA+ teams across Ireland.

GRATITUDE FOR SUPPORT

Aaron Kelly, Chairperson of NLA, expressed gratitude for the support:

“Many of our members are coming back to the GAA, having previously not felt like they could be their authentic selves. While that has changed, it is through support such as this from MTU that people gain confidence and comfort.”

Susan O’Donovan, a 2013 MTU graduate and NLA member, praised the university’s commitment to inclusion. “I was so thrilled to hear that Munster Technological University is sponsoring Na Laochra Aeracha GAA Club, a club I’m proud to be a member of. It’s inspiring to see a university so committed to DEI and to supporting communities that continue to face real challenges.”

Stephen McKenna, another MTU graduate, said:

“I'm proud that the institution I studied in continues to be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, and I believe this partnership demonstrates their commitment to their present and future queer students.”

The sponsorship includes access to MTU’s training facilities, coaching support, and mentorship through the university’s GAA office.
