Two FIRST LEGO League events took place in Cork recently, seeing more than 520 young girls take part, with the aim of promoting participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).

The showcases, hosted by Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine in conjunction with the Irish Girl Guides, took place at the Johnson & Johnson site at Barnahely in Ringaskiddy on April 6 and May 11.

The events were aimed at supporting young girls, aged between seven and 10 years old, in the South West of Ireland, in developing their Stem skills via a range of activities and challenges.

More than 60 Irish Girl Guides attended onsite workshops at the facility, with members from Johnson & Johnson and the Irish Girl Guides supporting 120 teams at the events, consisting of 523 young girls who are engaged in Stem across Ireland.

Participants involved in the initiative are a part of the 2024–2025 SUBMERGED programme: The ocean is more than what you can see on the horizon.

Challenges

The programme challenges young students to work together to design, build, and program robots using LEGO bricks, focusing on the fundamentals of engineering and exploring real-world problems.

The initiative encourages teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills, as well as promoting an interest in Stem subjects.

Johnson & Johnson’s partnership with the Irish Girl Guides is part of the company’s commitment to winning in Stem through the Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D programme.

The FIRST LEGO League Ireland initiative, delivered by Learnit since 2010, is supported by the Research Ireland Discover Programme.

FIRST LEGO League Ireland and Learnit are a part of the CreativeHUT Ireland group.
