The Lord Mayor of Cork, Green Party councillor Dan Boyle, has opened a book of condolences for the late Dan Wallace, former lord mayor, Minister of State, and Cork North Central TD.
The book of condolences, which is located in Cork City Hall, will be available to the public to sign between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, until Tuesday, March 4.
The former Fianna Fáil politician was an elected member of Cork Corporation from 1979 to 1992 and served as lord mayor of Cork from 1985 to 1986.
Elected to Dáil Éireann for Cork North Central in the November 1982 general election, he topped the poll, and was re-elected to Dáil Éireann in every subsequent election until he retired in 2007, serving almost 25 years in Leinster House.
Mr Wallace twice served as Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, from 1992 to 1993, and from 1997 to 2002.
Described by Taoiseach Micheál Martin as personifying “the decency, good nature and fighting spirit of the northside of Cork”, Mr Wallace represented the people of Cork North Central for over quarter of a century.
Upon learning of Mr Wallace’s passing, the Lord Mayor expressed his condolences to Mr Wallace’s family and friends, describing the former lord mayor as “a committed public representative devoted especially to the northside of the city”.
That love of his local area was also noted by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who said Mr Wallace had “personified the decency, good nature and fighting spirit of the northside of Cork”.
Mr Wallace will repose at Coughlan’s Funeral Home, Shandon Street from 11am on this Wednesday, February 19, with family in attendance from 4pm, and Rosary prayers at 7.00pm.
Mr Wallace’s Requiem Mass will take place at 11am on Thursday, February 20, in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree, where he was once a sacristan. His funeral will take place afterwards in St Mary’s New Cemetery, Curraghkippane.
First elected for Fianna Fáil in the local elections of 1979, representing the Cork City North-West ward in the then Cork Corporation, Mr Wallace went on to serve as lord mayor from 1985 to 1986.
Mr Wallace is survived by his wife Ethel, nee Sutton, his children Fiona, Damian, Kieran, Nicola and Andrea, grandchildren Daniel, Rachel, Aisling, Emma, Cathal, Seán, Naoise, Áine, Alex, Luke, Ciarán, Ben, Sam, Annabelle, Sarah and Rebecca and his great granddaughter Ellie, and his siblings Marie, John, Joan, Bernard, Eddie.
