East Cork venue to host musical celebration of iconic Irish poets

James Hurley and Dean Power. Great Irish Poets Songbook is an evening inspired by the unmatched Irish landscape and its history of occupation, struggle, love, and loss; bringing the powerful words of some of Ireland’s most iconic literary figures to life.

An East Cork venue will this month host an evening of song celebrating some of Ireland’s greatest poets.

The ‘Great Irish Poets Songbook’ event, on February 23 at Sea Church in Ballycotton, will bring the words of some of Ireland’s most iconic literary figures to life.

Tenor Dean Power, who is from Co Clare, will perform songs from the works of James Joyce, Fanny Parnell, WB Yeats, and Thomas Moore, compose and arranged by pianist James Hurley.

These poets, whose legacies have shaped Ireland’s literary tradition, form the heart of the Great Irish Poets Songbook event, a project dedicated to setting their iconic texts to music.

The evening will feature newly composed and arranged settings of poems by Yeats, Joyce, Wilde, and Parnell, along with Moore’s Melodies.

The project, which now includes more than 25 newly composed pieces, offers a powerful exploration of Ireland’s literary and musical heritage.
