Popular Cork bar to close but incoming owners have 'big plans to renovate and relaunch'

The long-standing Douglas-based business announced that the venue will be temporarily closing after 20 years of business.

A Cork restaurant and late-night bar has announced a temporary closure following two decades of trading, as ownership is set to change hands this month.

The long-standing Douglas-based business, East Village, which is located adjacent to the McDonald’s chain drive-thru, announced via a social media post last night that the venue will be closing after 20 years of business.

A spokesperson for the venue stated that despite many laughs and unforgettable memories at the bar, staff are sad to say that it is “time to say goodbye.”

“All of us here at East Village would like to thank all of our wonderful customers and staff, friends and family, for joining us over the years."

The post also shared details of a ‘farewell party’, which will be taking place at the venue this Saturday.

In a follow up post shared this afternoon, the company further stated that despite its closure, it is “good news” as the incoming owners have “big plans” to renovate the space and relaunch the venue.

“As we are in that limbo legal period, we can’t disclose too much until [January 21] but as we say goodbye, and thank you to all our customers and staff, we look forward to visiting the rejuvenated East Village in a few months.”

The post further clarified that the venue will be open on Sunday for the Liverpool v Manchester United football match, and will be closed after Sunday to “facilitate a smooth transition [for] the new owners.”
